Rulo technique: positioning and hand speed
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I hit a consistent rulo in padel?
You must let the ball drop behind your head and speed up your hand at contact. If you hit the ball too far in front, you will fall forward and lose your balance.
What this lesson covers
The rulo requires letting the ball drop behind the head rather than hitting it in front. Letting the ball drop too far forward causes the player to fall into the net or hit the ball into the fence. Turning the body sideways and showing the back to the fence creates the necessary space for the swing. Speeding up the hand at the moment of contact ensures the ball clears the net and stays in play.
When the lob is wide, the rulo provides the best angle for a transition to the net. If the lob is tight or toward the middle, the player must rely on hand action to guide the ball. Making the body big and avoiding a forward lean allows for better control. Jumping backward when the ball travels deep provides extra time to execute the shot effectively. Consistent practice in match-like scenarios helps build the confidence needed to avoid playing too safely.
