Rulo and bandeja: technical differences and execution

The rulo requires a continental grip with the ball contact point slightly behind the body. Players initiate the movement with a small jump backwards to maintain momentum for a quick transition back to the net. The stroke involves brushing over the top of the ball while aiming toward the side fence, specifically targeting the area between the fence and the glass. Adding arc to the shot helps clear the net when the fence tension is high, preventing the ball from hitting the net directly.

In contrast, the flat bandeja uses a standard continental grip with contact made at the highest possible point. The focus remains on driving through the ball with the shoulders to keep the trajectory flat and avoid excessive spin. Unlike the rulo, which relies on a backward jump, the flat bandeja requires a stable base to allow for aggressive, fast-paced shots. Players vary their target based on the opponent's positioning, using the flat strike to pressure the middle or deep court. Both shots demand constant awareness of the opponent's movement to avoid predictable patterns.
