Key takeaway from our Guru

How can I break my opponent's serve in padel?

Aim your return at the server's feet to force a low contact point. Keep your backswing compact so you can control the speed and direction of the ball.

What this lesson covers

Breaking the serve requires adjusting the return based on the opponent's position and the depth of the ball. Aiming for the server's feet forces a lower contact point and limits their ability to attack at the net. To slow down a return, maintain a compact backswing and push the ball forward rather than taking a full swing. If the serve is deep or fast off the glass, playing the ball down is safer than attempting a lob, which risks going out.

Targeting the server's backhand or the middle of the court often restricts their options, whereas playing to the forehand allows them to dictate the point. When choosing to lob, direct the ball over the player already positioned at the net rather than the one moving in, as this forces the server to cover more ground. For short serves, taking the ball early as a half-volley denies the server time to advance, effectively neutralizing their net position. Hard, fast returns directed at the player already stationed at the net can also disrupt their rhythm and create opportunities for a follow-up shot.
