Offensive defense: angles and speed variation

TopspinJul 25, 2022

Key takeaway from our Guru

How can I play more offensively from the back of the court?

When you have time, use topspin with a closed racket face to force the opponent to play a difficult half-volley. If you are under pressure, avoid the lob and play a safe, slower ball toward the middle to reset the point.

What this lesson covers

Defending from the back of the court requires choosing between different speeds and angles to disrupt the opponents at the net. When the ball arrives before the glass, players use a closed racket face to brush the ball with topspin. This creates a lower trajectory that forces the opponent to play a half-volley instead of a high-impact volley. When playing off the glass, the racket face remains more open to execute flat shots or slices toward the fence. Using the entire arm rather than just the wrist ensures a consistent contact point and allows the player to carry the ball over the net.

Effective defense relies on active movement, especially against slower incoming balls. Players should move toward the ball to take it early, which keeps the contact point higher and limits the opponent's reaction time. Under pressure, the priority is to play safe shots toward the middle rather than attempting high-risk lobs or difficult angles. When a player successfully forces a weaker shot from the opponent, they should look to transition forward to the net. This lesson is for players who are already comfortable with glass rebounds and want to add variety to their defensive game.
