Effective net play relies on maintaining a constant, imaginary rope between partners. This tension ensures both players shift as a single unit, mirroring the opponent's movement to cover the court. When an opponent moves to the right, the team shifts right. If the ball travels to the center, both players move toward the middle to protect the gap. Avoiding the no-man's land between the service line and the net is critical; players must commit to either a deep defensive position or a forward attacking stance.
Communication and role definition prevent overlapping. One player protects the middle while the other covers the sideline, specifically guarding the opponent's strongest shot. If a partner plays a bandeja, the team holds the net position to apply pressure rather than retreating. Conversely, if an opponent stands too close to the net, a lob forces them to track back over a long distance, often resulting in a lost point. Consistent practice involves drilling volleys while focusing on recovery to the correct central position after every shot.
