Net positioning and defensive volley tactics

Net play requires reading the opponent's shot trajectory to decide between blocking or moving back to defend. If an opponent hits a ball that rises off the back glass, anticipate a cross-court shot. When under pressure, recognize that being at the net does not always mean attacking. Defensive volleys should be slow and deep to neutralize the opponent's momentum.

Giving yourself space by stepping back allows you to move forward more effectively, as forward movement is naturally faster than backward movement. When a ball has more time, let it bounce to play from a higher contact point, which facilitates a better trajectory for your next shot. Keep the racket up and separated from your body as soon as the ball is incoming. Avoid rushing to hit every ball at the net; prioritize control over power to remain the boss of the point.
