Net position: reading opponents and defensive volleys

Net position does not always mean attacking. Players often make the mistake of assuming they must hit an aggressive volley regardless of the incoming ball. When the opponent hits a low or difficult shot, the priority shifts to defense. A defensive volley should be slow and deep to neutralize the pressure. If the ball has more height and time, letting it bounce allows the player to move into a better position and strike from above to below, offering more control than a forced volley.

Reading the opponent requires observing their racket preparation and the trajectory of their shot. A ball hit from behind the body often travels upwards, signaling a potential cross-court shot. If a player finds themselves making repeated errors at the net, they should create more space by stepping back. Moving backwards creates the necessary distance to execute a stronger bandeja or to move forward again with momentum. Players run faster moving forward than backward, so maintaining this space allows for quicker reactions and better shot selection.
