Net finishing: trick shots and smash out techniques

Net finishing requires patience and precise positioning to avoid touching the net while executing high-risk shots. To practice, start with static drills near the net to understand your reach and spatial awareness. When receiving a smash, observe the ball trajectory to decide between a smash out, a dormilona, or a crosscourt finish. High contact points reduce the risk of hitting the net, so aim to get over the ball with the racket head rather than swinging through.

For the dormilona, use a continental grip and brush the ball to create backspin, aiming to drop it just over the net. When attempting a backhand smash out, keep the elbow high and focus on a short angle to minimize the power needed. Avoid over-hitting; a controlled, high-elbow motion is sufficient to send the ball out of the court. These shots are most effective for players looking to convert defensive lobs or smashes into immediate winners.
