Lob technique: low preparation and flat contact

The lob requires a low starting position for the racket. Imagine holding a beer tray to keep the racket face flat during the swing. This flat contact prevents the ball from bouncing off the back wall, which happens more often with topspin. A flat lob forces the opponent to stay close to the glass, making it difficult for them to generate an attack. Avoid using slice for lobs unless you are an advanced player, as the backspin keeps the ball in the air longer and increases the risk of it landing out.

Height is the primary defensive factor. A low lob allows the opponent to smash, while a high lob forces the ball to drop steeply, making it harder to return. Use the drill of balancing the ball on the racket face while moving from a low to a high position to practice the correct trajectory. Aim to hit the lights above the court to ensure enough height.
