Three tactical combinations help players transition to the net. The first involves playing a chiquita before the lob. At a beginner level, this changes the rhythm and keeps opponents guessing. At an advanced level, it draws the opponent forward to create space behind them for the subsequent lob.
The second tactic is the double lob. Beginners benefit from this when their first lob is defensive or poorly placed, as it provides a second opportunity to hit a better ball while the opponent is out of position. Advanced players use this to force opponents to change direction, as they often rush the net after hitting a bandeja. The second lob catches them moving forward, making it difficult to set their feet.
The third tactic is a high crosscourt lob followed by an angled shot towards the fence. Beginners use the large space created to hit a controlled crosscourt ball. Advanced players use this to force the opponent to stretch or volley from a difficult position. The coach recommends using the first few games of a match to focus on the depth of the lob rather than just feeding overheads for the opponent.
