High lob technique to reach the net
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I use a high lob to reach the net safely?
Hit your lob significantly higher to force the opponent to wait for the ball. This extra height gives you the time needed to move forward and reach a comfortable volley position at the net.
What this lesson covers
Moving to the net requires more than just a standard lob. When playing against opponents who possess a strong bandeja, a higher trajectory forces them to wait longer for the ball to descend. This extra time allows the player to advance safely into a solid net position instead of getting stuck in no man's land. By adding four to five meters of height to the lob, the ball drops faster, which limits the opponent's ability to generate power or hit an aggressive shot toward the fence.
Even if the lob lands near the service line rather than deep in the corner, the increased height serves its purpose. The opponent must open their racket face to block the fast-dropping ball, preventing them from attacking. Combining this high lob with the chiquita makes a player unpredictable, forcing the opponent to guess the next move. This tactic is particularly effective for players with fast, reactive volleys who want to control the net.
