Glass returns: half volley and lob techniques

Two specific return strategies from the glass allow players to neutralize an opponent's serve. The half volley glass return targets the feet of the incoming server. This shot works best when the opponent serves deep or leaves significant space in front of them. Preparation must be early and compact, with the racket kept close to the body. Standing your ground is vital, as stepping back forces the ball upward. The racket head leads through the contact point to create angles, while a leading grip often results in errors.

The lob return serves to regain the net position or force an opponent out of balance. This shot is effective when the server stands close to the glass or rushes the net without a proper split step. Unlike the half volley, the player must move away from the ball to allow it to slow down after hitting the glass. A low preparation with an open racket face followed by a high follow-through ensures the ball clears the opponents. Targeting the server who is moving forward or the partner who is lazy in their transition creates the most difficulty for the opposing pair.
