The first volley after the serve requires a calm approach to secure the net position. Players often rush this shot by trying to hit winners or switching targets too quickly. The primary strategy involves hitting the first volley to the same player you served to, which simplifies movement and keeps the team structure stable. Aim to hit the ball deeper into the court, ideally reaching the opponent's glass, to force a low return and buy time to advance closer to the net.

Effective net coverage depends on knowing where to move based on the serve location. Serving to the center requires more lateral movement than serving to the glass. Always perform a split step just before the opponent makes contact to remain balanced and ready to move in any direction. Avoid hitting the ball too early or too far in front of the body, as this leads to a rushed block rather than a controlled strike. A longer, controlled swing helps maintain depth and accuracy. This approach is most beneficial for players who struggle to hold the net after their serve.
