Dropshot technique: wrist control and deception

The dropshot is an offensive concept designed to force opponents to move forward uncomfortably. Players often fail by telegraphing the shot early with a stiff, pronated wrist. To mask the intention, keep the grip neutral and decide the direction based on the contact point rather than wrist movement. Striking the ball in front sends it cross-court, while hitting it in line with the body or slightly behind allows for middle or down-the-line placement.

Tactically, the dropshot should not be forced when under pressure. It is most effective after moving an opponent toward the sidewall with a previous volley. Avoid aiming for the net; the goal is to keep the ball low and force a difficult approach. Additionally, a lack of a split step prevents proper movement to the ball, leading to rushed, inaccurate shots. Loosening the fingers during contact helps the ball stay on the racket slightly longer, providing better touch. These adjustments allow for a more unpredictable game, separating intermediate players from those at the top level.
