Defensive shot selection when a lob is not possible

When a lob is not an option, the primary goal from a defensive position is to neutralize the net players by controlling speed and target. Playing soft, low balls into the center is a safe choice that limits the opponents' ability to create sharp angles. If the opponents are positioned close to the net, hitting fast shots directly at their bodies can disrupt their rhythm and force errors. Conversely, if the opponents are further back, playing slower, controlled shots is more effective.

Decision-making depends heavily on court positioning. When playing cross-court, the partner must be prepared to cover the parallel line to prevent an easy winner against the fence. Increasing ball speed while simultaneously creating a wide angle is risky, as it often leaves the court open and forces the defensive pair to cover too much ground. Instead, prioritize keeping the ball in play and forcing the opponents to move. The most effective strategy involves observing the opponents' net position and adjusting the shot speed and placement to keep them from hitting comfortable volleys.
