Effective defense relies on moving backward early to create space, regardless of whether the ball is eventually played off the glass or taken as a volley. Players often make the mistake of deciding too early, which forces them to stand too close to the net or become trapped behind the ball. By moving back immediately upon seeing a deep shot, the player keeps the ball in front, allowing for a higher contact point and more tactical options, such as playing cross-court or punishing an out-of-position opponent.

When the ball is hit behind the body, the player loses the ability to direct the shot effectively and is forced to play a slow, high ball. Proper footwork involves small, quick steps to open up the court, ensuring the body is behind the ball before contact. This preparation allows the player to remain calm and decide at the last possible moment whether to let the ball hit the glass or to step in for a volley. This approach is most beneficial for players who feel rushed in defense and struggle to maintain their position against high-quality slices or fast-paced shots.
