Continental grip and advanced grip adjustments

Key takeaway from our Guru

Should I change my grip for different padel shots?

Stick to the Continental grip for every shot while you are learning. Only move your hand down the handle to gain extra wrist whip for a vibora or to help lift a low ball off the glass once you reach an advanced level.

What this lesson covers

The Continental grip serves as the foundation for all shots for players from beginner to high intermediate levels. This grip is located by sliding the hand down the handle as if shaking hands with the racket. The hand must remain fully on the grip, avoiding any finger placement through the throat or dangling off the end. A consistent base ensures proper technique before moving toward advanced experimentation.

Advanced players occasionally adjust the grip position to gain specific advantages. When defending low balls off the back glass, sliding the hand slightly off the end of the handle allows for easier racket head drop and better ball lift. Similarly, for the vibora or topspin smash, moving the hand down the grip provides more wrist freedom and whip for increased spin. When adjusting, the non-dominant hand should guide the racket to the new position while the dominant hand shifts. These modifications remain a matter of personal preference and should only be explored after establishing a solid foundation with the standard Continental grip.
