Deciding between a smash and a bandeja requires evaluating environmental factors and court conditions. Warm temperatures, high altitude, and new balls favor the smash, as these conditions increase ball bounce and speed. Conversely, cold weather, low altitude, old balls, or wet surfaces make the bandeja a more reliable choice to maintain the net position. The court surface also plays a role, as courts with less sand or older surfaces can alter the expected bounce height.

Tactical awareness involves reading the opponent and the incoming lob. If the lob is low, the bandeja is safer to avoid losing the net. If the ball is extremely high, a block may be more effective than a forced smash. Against fast opponents or strong blockers, mixing speeds and using slice makes the ball harder to return. Position on the court also dictates the shot choice, with the left-side player having more opportunities for smashes, provided the ball is positioned correctly over the head or left shoulder. The ability to adjust these variables in real-time determines the effectiveness of the chosen shot.
