Choosing a side: left versus right court roles

The left side demands a more aggressive and dynamic player. This position covers roughly sixty percent of the court and requires frequent movement to the middle to handle smashes or aggressive bandeja shots. The player on the left needs the ability to finish points, often by kicking the ball over the fence or finding sharp angles into the corners.

The right side focuses on control and consistency. The primary goal is to set up the point, forcing opponents into weak returns that the partner on the left can capitalize on. These players prioritize accuracy, lobbing, and minimizing unforced errors to maintain pressure. If a player is left-handed, the right side is the natural position to keep the smash and bandeja in the center of the court.

These roles are not fixed rules. Elite pairs often break these conventions based on individual skill sets and chemistry. For those new to the game, the best approach is to rotate between both sides to gain a full understanding of the court geometry and tactical requirements before committing to one role.
