Chiquita technique: slow pace and split step

The chiquita serves to transition from the back of the court to the net by forcing opponents to hit from below net height. Success relies on reading the opponent's position and height. If opponents stand close to the net, a lob is safer to avoid a high contact point that allows them to attack. When opponents are further back, a slow ball played to their feet draws them forward or creates space to advance. Mixing this shot with lobs prevents opponents from anticipating the movement and setting up for a smash.

Technique requires minimal backswing and a controlled follow-through. When playing off the back glass, wait for the ball to travel in front of the body before contact to avoid rushing. Avoid excessive slice, as it keeps the ball in the air longer, giving opponents more time. A flat shot or slight topspin works best. The most important movement is the split step performed exactly when the opponent makes contact with the ball. This allows for quick adjustments to volleys hit to either side. Both partners must move forward together to maintain pressure and secure the net position.
