Chiquita tactics: communication and court positioning
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I use the chiquita effectively in a match?
You must tell your partner before you play the chiquita so they are ready to move. Play the shot down the line to keep your defensive shape and cover the middle.
What this lesson covers
The chiquita is a difficult shot played when not under pressure to force an opponent into a poor decision by limiting their time. A successful chiquita lands at the opponent's feet, preventing them from playing a clean shot. Because the shot is technically demanding, players must communicate their intention to their partner before executing it. This allows the partner to anticipate the move and prepare to cover the middle or move forward to capitalize on the opponent's weak return.
Tactical positioning dictates that a player should play a chiquita down the line rather than crosscourt if they want to maintain defensive stability. Playing crosscourt leaves the middle exposed if the partner is not perfectly positioned to cover it. Furthermore, players should adjust their starting position based on the opponent's tendencies. If an opponent relies heavily on lobs, standing half a meter further back allows for better movement to reach the ball. Padel is a game of rapid decision-making, and players who communicate effectively gain a significant advantage by acting as a synchronized unit.
