Center court coverage: who takes the middle ball
Key takeaway from our Guru
Who should take the ball in the middle of the court?
The player who is positioned square to the opponent hitting the ball should take the center. Your partner should stagger their position to cover the remaining space and force the opponent to play the harder cross-court shot.
What this lesson covers
Defending the middle requires understanding the angle of the incoming ball. When at the net, the player positioned directly in front of the opponent hitting the ball stays square, while the partner shifts to cover the center. This staggered formation forces the opponent to play the most difficult shot, which is the cross-court angle. The player covering the center must anticipate the trajectory to intercept the ball before it passes behind them.
From the back of the court, the same logic applies. The player who is square to the incoming ball should prioritize the center, as the bounce often lands closer to them. Moving to the middle when positioned at an angle leaves the side of the court exposed, creating an easy target for opponents. Constant movement and clear communication are necessary to avoid confusion. Ultimately, the player with the best angle to the ball should take the center, but this depends on the specific strengths and agreements of the pair.
