Block volley technique against aggressive shots
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I defend a hard-hit ball when I am at the net?
Expect every ball to come to you and keep your racket in a central position. Block the ball into open space to neutralize the power instead of attempting a high-risk winner.
What this lesson covers
Defending from the net position requires constant anticipation. Players often drop their racket or lose focus when their partner is engaged in a rally, leaving them vulnerable to a sudden aggressive shot. The first step involves expecting every ball to come your way, regardless of your location on the court. Observe the opponent's body position as they prepare to strike, especially if they are running off the back glass to hit a fast bajada.
For beginners, keep the racket in a central position to react quickly to either side. Advanced players should bring the racket closer to the body on the backhand side to cover more surface area against high-speed shots. Maintain a split step and stay on your toes at the net. Position yourself near the second post, adjusting forward if the opponent lacks the ability to hit angles or drop shots. When blocking, aim for open space rather than high-risk targets. The goal is to neutralize the power and regain a dominant net position. Do not retreat after one aggressive winner from an opponent. Maintain confidence and continue applying pressure.
