Bandeja and Vibora: technique and differences
Key takeaway from our Guru
What is the main difference between a bandeja and a vibora?
The bandeja uses a more extended arm, while the vibora requires wrist mobility and an outward hand movement. Avoid dropping your elbow; keep your hand loose and aim to brush the ball on its side to generate the lateral spin.
What this lesson covers
The bandeja requires an extended arm during the preparation, whereas the vibora relies on wrist mobility and a specific hand position. A common error involves dropping the elbow too low or trying to hang the racket behind the back, which causes the player to strike the ball from below and lose the intended trajectory. To execute the vibora, the hand must move outward as if throwing the racket, avoiding any downward wrist movement.
Check the hand position by touching the back of the neck with the racket edge. The elbow should align with the shoulder, moving directly upward and outward with a loose, flexible wrist. Aim to strike the ball on its right shoulder to create a lateral curve. Instead of a flat, dry hit, focus on wrapping around the ball and pushing it forward. Releasing the pinky finger from the grip can help players who struggle with excessive tension, allowing the racket to move more freely and helping the player register the correct sensation of the swing.
