Bajada technique: positioning and shot selection
Key takeaway from our Guru
Where should I aim when playing a bajada off the back glass?
Aim down the middle or down the line to keep the shot safe and controlled. If your opponents crowd the net to block your aggressive shots, use an intentional lob to send them back.
What this lesson covers
Successful execution of the bajada begins with movement behind the ball. Proper footwork creates a V-shape path to ensure the player is set before the ball bounces off the back glass. Contact must occur in front of the body to maintain forward momentum. When the ball stays too close to the glass or hits the fence, the opportunity to attack diminishes, making a defensive lob the safer choice.
Shot selection depends on the side of the court and the opponent's position. From the forehand side, hitting down the middle or down the line offers the most control. Cross-court angles carry higher risk but become viable when opponents shift to cover the center. An intentional lob serves as a potent weapon once opponents start crowding the net to block aggressive shots. Communication with a partner provides the necessary information about opponent movement, allowing for better tactical decisions. Players must also decide early whether to let the ball bounce for a bajada or to intercept it with a bandeja to preserve net position.
