Bajada tactics: risk and target selection
Key takeaway from our Guru
Where should I aim my bajada to reduce risk?
Aim down the middle to maximize your margin of error. If you choose to play to the open side or across your body, take pace off the ball to ensure you keep it in play.
What this lesson covers
Effective bajada play relies on balancing risk against reward. The foundation is rapid movement behind the ball to ensure contact remains in front of the body. Poor positioning, such as letting the ball get behind you or running in line with the ball, restricts your shot options and forces errors. Once in position, the primary goal is to maintain control rather than relying on raw power.
Down the middle is the lowest-risk target because it provides the largest margin of error. The open side serves as the second-best option, though it requires taking pace off the ball to maintain accuracy. Playing to the closed side, which involves hitting across the body, carries the highest risk and should be reserved for specific tactical moments, such as when an opponent is slow to reach the net or leaves a gap. A well-placed lob remains a viable, low-risk alternative when you are in a strong position but choose not to attack. Partner communication is essential at higher levels, as knowing which opponent is back allows you to adjust your target and significantly reduce the risk of your shot.
