Bajada defense: positioning and partner coordination

Defending the bajada requires adjusting court position based on the opponent's specific style. When facing players who excel at short angles, move closer to the net to intercept the ball early. If the opponent hits deeper, flatter, or more powerful bajadas, standing further back near the service line or even behind the baseline allows for better use of the glass. The choice between net and backcourt depends on personal defensive skill and the opponent's tendency to exploit gaps.

Effective coordination with a partner is vital to avoid leaving the middle open. When both players are at the back, the crosscourt player should generally take the middle balls to maintain a solid defensive structure. In a split formation, the player parallel to the opponent stays at the net, while the crosscourt player covers the back. Maintaining roughly 1.5 meters of distance between partners helps manage the court, and the crosscourt player should prioritize returning the ball to the direction it came from to minimize errors. Adapting these positions throughout the match keeps opponents guessing and reduces the likelihood of conceding easy points.
