The backhand volley aims to maintain the net position and build the point rather than ending it immediately. Success depends on decision making regarding court position, contact height, and opponent quality. When positioned far from the net, play cross-court to allow time to move forward. Close to the net, more options open up, but avoid overly difficult shots that risk a lob. Always prioritize keeping the ball low to prevent the opponent from attacking.

Technique requires a continental grip to maintain control and a body turn to facilitate a horizontal swing. Prepare with both hands to ensure the shoulders rotate. Keep the wrist firm during contact, especially when blocking fast balls. If the ball is higher than the net, move the racket from high to low to generate pace and keep the ball flat. If the ball is low, block it with a short, controlled motion to avoid lifting it. Aim to hit cross-court by contacting the ball early in front of the body, or hit later to direct the ball down the line.
