Backhand smash: technique and tactical decision making

A backhand smash occurs when the contact point is above head height. Unlike a backhand volley, where shoulder rotation generates power, the overhead backhand relies primarily on the arm. Because the player cannot get underneath the ball, the shot trajectory will naturally bounce up at the other end. Prioritize accuracy and placement over raw power, aiming for a firm contact slightly in front of the body.

Tactical choices take precedence over execution. Before attempting the shot, evaluate if the partner can cover the ball with a vibora or if the ball can be left to bounce off the back glass for a more controlled return. When playing the shot, avoid cross-court trajectories that leave the court exposed. Instead, aim for the middle or down the line toward the fence or side glass. The objective is to land the second bounce near the back glass, forcing the opponents into a difficult defensive position.

Common errors include attempting the shot while moving backward on deep lobs or trying to finish the point with excessive power. This shot is most effective when the opponent's position is predictable, such as during a return of serve. Players should prioritize height and depth to avoid giving opponents an easy ball to attack.
