Backhand off the glass: spacing and timing

Successful backhand play off the back glass requires creating sufficient distance from the ball, particularly when it arrives from a cross-court angle. Players often crowd the ball, which forces a cramped hitting motion and poor contact. The glass acts as a mirror, so the ball exits at the same angle it enters; compensating for this by taking extra, quick steps away from the glass provides the necessary space to extend the arm and hit the ball in front of the body.

Effective technique relies on early racket preparation, keeping the racket head below the ball, and avoiding an overly long swing. Rushing the shot often leads to hitting the ball too high or too far behind the body. Instead, the player should wait for the ball to drop into a comfortable hitting zone, maintaining a short, controlled preparation. Constant footwork adjustments until the moment of impact are essential to ensure the player is not blocked or too close to the glass. This approach is most beneficial for intermediate players who struggle with timing and positioning on defensive backhand shots.
