Tactical net positioning and lob management
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I maintain control of the net during a competitive match?
Keep your volleys deep and target the opponent's body. If you are forced to defend, repeat your lobs until you can safely transition to the net.
What this lesson covers
Effective net play relies on aggressive positioning and constant pressure on the opponents. When defending from the back, prioritize deep lobs to the drive player to force them away from the net. If a lob falls short, avoid playing low balls that allow the opponents to attack; instead, repeat the lob until a comfortable opportunity arises to transition forward. When the ball is played to the middle, maintain a compact formation to minimize gaps for the opponents to exploit.
At the net, focus on hitting volleys deep into the opponent's court, specifically targeting the body of the drive player. If a volley remains short, be prepared to follow up with a firm shot down the line. When a ball is played off the back glass, use it as an opportunity to reset with a high, deep lob, allowing both players to move up and secure the net position. Aggressive movement forward after a successful lob is essential to maintaining control of the point.
