Smash selection: flat, fake and kick overheads
Key takeaway from our Guru
When should I use a flat, fake or kick smash?
Use a flat smash when opponents are deep at the glass. Save the fake smash for when you have already hit several overheads and want to catch aggressive opponents off guard. If you play on the left, use the kick smash to pull the ball out of the court.
What this lesson covers
Selecting the right overhead depends on the opponent's position and the ease of the incoming lob. A flat smash works best when the ball is high and the opponents are pinned against the back glass. This distance forces them to cover significant ground to reach the ball.
The fake smash relies on deception after establishing a pattern of aggressive overheads. It requires an easy ball to sell the motion convincingly to opponents who habitually rush forward. The kick smash is most effective from the left side of the court where the angle makes it easier to send the ball out of play. Right-sided players benefit more from prioritizing the flat smash.
