Smash power: kinetic chain and whip effect

Key takeaway from our Guru

How can I increase the power of my padel smash?

You must avoid starting your swing from a dead position with the racket already back. Instead, keep your elbow back and racket head down to initiate a quick racket drop that generates a whip effect.

What this lesson covers

Power in the smash relies on a continuous kinetic chain starting from the feet and moving through the core to the arm. A wide stance keeps the back foot aligned with the front foot, which allows for proper hip rotation. Moving the back foot in front of the front foot prevents this rotation and kills power before the swing begins.

Leg drive requires a quick transition from loading to extension. Holding a loaded position for longer than half a second causes the loss of elastic energy. Similarly, the upper body must avoid starting from a dead point where the racket is already back. Instead, the motion should begin with the racket head pointing down and the elbow back. This position allows for a racket drop that creates a whip effect through the stretch-shortening cycle.

Maintaining the non-dominant arm high until contact keeps the shoulders tilted and preserves the hip coil. Dropping this arm too early levels the shoulders and eliminates the energy transfer from the core. Improving shoulder external rotation increases the range of motion for this whip effect. Practicing the throwing motion without a racket helps develop the timing needed for the smash.
