Sidewall return technique and positioning

Successful returns off the sidewall depend on court positioning and a clear decision-making rule. Players should stand closer to the sidewall than the center to minimize movement when the ball angles toward the glass. Preparation requires a low, compact stance with the racket held low. Leaning back or keeping the racket high leads to errors, so the focus remains on driving forward and staying low into the shot.

The sidewall is divided into two sections for decision-making. If the ball hits the first panel, let it bounce off the glass, take a step back, and lift the ball low to high with a flat stroke. If the ball tracks toward the back glass, intercept it before it hits the wall using a compact blocking motion. Avoid adding spin, as a flat contact provides more control. When returning from the backhand side, aim for the middle of the court or use a lob to neutralize the point. On the forehand side, directing the ball down the line toward the opponent's backhand is often the most effective choice.
