Playing against lefties: tactics and positioning
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I play against a left-handed padel player?
Keep the ball low to force the lefty to play from below the net. If you are uncomfortable, slow down the pace instead of forcing a shot.
What this lesson covers
Playing against a left-handed opponent requires specific adjustments to handle the different angles and spin. When defending, avoid hitting high balls that allow the lefty to use their overheads, especially the vibora. Instead, keep the ball low to force the opponent to play from below the net. This limits their ability to dictate the point and keeps them away from the net position.
To create openings, use the chiquita to draw the lefty forward, then look to gain net position immediately. When attacking, avoid hitting the ball towards the back glass, as this allows the lefty to reset the point easily. Target the right leg or play through the middle to disrupt their rhythm. If the ball is floating above your head, prioritize slowing down the pace rather than forcing a high-risk shot. Consistent, deep lobs are necessary to force the opponent back, but these must be hit early to avoid being caught out of position.
