Net attacking tactics: patience and shot selection
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I attack effectively at the net without getting lobbed?
Only attack when you are playing above net level. Keep hitting to the same player to keep the court closed, and use high-to-low volleys to force your opponent to play from below their knees.
What this lesson covers
Attacking at the net requires distinguishing between being at the net and actually attacking. A player is only attacking when playing above net level. Balls played below the knee, fast shots to the chest, or high backhand volleys are defensive situations even when standing at the net. Wait for balls that arrive high enough relative to the net and without excessive pace to initiate an attack.
Avoid changing directions constantly to prevent leaving gaps in the court. Maintain pressure by targeting the same opponent repeatedly, forcing them to move between the side glass and the center. If a change of direction is necessary, move the ball to the center first before switching to the other player. This two-step transition allows both partners to adjust their positioning safely.
Prevent lobs by keeping volleys high to low to force opponents to play below the knee. Avoid deep volleys to the center unless the shot is fast or has enough slice to keep the bounce low. If unable to play a high-quality volley, return the ball to the same player in the corner to keep the court closed. Success at the net depends on both partners following this structure as a team.
