Middle court tactics: aiming and ball placement

Playing to the middle creates confusion and physical friction between opponents. It forces them to leave the corners unprotected while they scramble to cover the center. The middle serves as the largest target on the court, providing a greater margin for error compared to shots directed near the side glass. When the ball is on the inside, hit a straight volley with enough pace to bounce before the service line without reaching the back glass. This keeps the ball low and prevents the opponents from using the rebound to hit an aggressive lob or an angled winner.

When the ball arrives on the outside, aim for the half-square so the second bounce lands in the center. Hitting directly at the middle line from the outside often places the ball right on the opponent's hand, making it easy for them to return. If the opponent struggles to recover their position after moving to the center, continue attacking the middle. Only shift to the corner if the opponent fails to cover it or if a clear opening exists to penetrate the space. This approach suits players who want to increase their consistency by using larger targets.
