The player positioned cross-court to the incoming ball bears primary responsibility for the middle. This rule applies regardless of whether the shot lands on a forehand or backhand side. The player cross-court to the ball is responsible for the ball twice, both on its way toward the center and on its way back after a potential rebound off the glass. This logic dictates that the partner should only intervene to cover or assist if the primary player fails to reach the ball.

When shots are played deep into the corners, the hitter leaves eighty percent of the court exposed for their partner to defend. This creates a significant tactical disadvantage unless the shot causes immediate damage to the opponents. Players must move their legs and use their reach to cover the logical angles rather than standing still. If a player forces their partner into a wide position, they must be prepared to cover the resulting gaps in the middle.
