Managing a lower level partner: tactics and mindset
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I play effectively with a weaker padel partner?
Accept that your opponents will target your partner and stay active in your ready position even when you are not hitting the ball. Do not coach your partner during the match, but keep your communication positive to avoid adding pressure.
What this lesson covers
Playing with a partner of a lower skill level requires balancing patience with active intensity. Opponents often target the weaker player, a tactic known as the fridge. To counter this, the stronger player must remain in a ready position even when not hitting the ball, ensuring they are prepared to act when the ball eventually arrives. Avoid the trap of attempting winners on every touch, as this leads to unforced errors and increased frustration.
Positioning and strategy adjustments are vital. The stronger player should occupy the left side of the court to cover overheads, while the less experienced partner focuses on playing down the line to limit their exposure and allow the stronger player to cover more of the middle. Keep communication simple, limiting tactical instructions to one or two clear goals. Maintain positive body language to prevent the partner from feeling additional pressure, as this creates a negative feedback loop. Use long breaks between games to disrupt the opponents' momentum and recalibrate the team strategy.
