Lob technique: body rotation and depth control
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I use the lob to transition to the net?
Choose an easy, slow ball and use your whole body to push the ball deep into the center of the court. Do not rely on your wrist, as body rotation is what gives you control.
What this lesson covers
The lob serves as an aggressive transition tool to move from the back of the court to the net. Success depends on selecting the right ball. When the incoming shot is fast or difficult, block the ball to stay in the point rather than forcing a lob that results in a short ball or hits the back glass. Wait for an easy, slower ball that allows enough time to get the racket head below the ball for a high, deep trajectory.
Technique requires opening the racket face and using the entire body to follow through instead of relying on the wrist. This body rotation provides better control and consistency. To prevent opponents from anticipating the shot and preparing a bandeja, disguise the preparation until the last moment. Aim deep into the center of the court to minimize the opponent's ability to use the side glass or double glass. Adding a slight slice helps the ball stay low after the bounce, which limits the opponent's options for a bajada. Practice this by targeting a specific area behind the service line while moving from defense to attack.
