Drop your shoulder and keep your racket head touching the ground. Stay loose and use the ball's existing pace to guide it forward instead of trying to hit it hard.
The half volley serves as a defensive solution when a fast ball lands at the feet with no room to move back or let it hit the glass. Success depends on maintaining a relaxed grip rather than tightening up, as tension pulls the racket head away from the ground and leads to poor contact on the frame. The shoulder must drop to ensure the racket head stays near the surface at the moment of impact.
Because the incoming ball already carries pace, the goal is to redirect that energy rather than adding extra force. Soft hands allow for precise control, while a forward follow-through carries the ball over the net. Practice involves hitting the ball immediately after the bounce to build timing. This lesson suits players who struggle to handle fast balls that jam their position at the net.
