Forehand volley technique: ready position and rotation

Volley11:20Sep 1, 2026

Key takeaway from our Guru

How can I improve the consistency and power of my forehand volley?

Keep your racket at chest height in the ready position to ensure you are prepared in time. Use your shoulder rotation to generate power instead of relying on your wrist, and always aim to contact the ball in front of your body.

What this lesson covers

The forehand volley requires a high ready position with the racket at chest height and the tip pointing up. This starting point allows for quicker preparation and a more consistent point of impact. When the ball arrives at the body, the player must move away to create space rather than adjusting with the hand. If the ball arrives late, the player should focus on a compact movement rather than an aggressive swing to avoid hitting the ball into the back glass.

To generate slice without excessive wrist movement, the racket should be prepared above the ball. The swing follows a path that moves forward rather than strictly high to low to prevent the ball from hitting the net. Power originates from the rotation of the upper body and shoulders, especially when the player has time to let the ball enter their space. During drills, the player practices feeding the ball to themselves while focusing on shifting weight from the back leg to the front leg. This session is for players who struggle with consistency and depth on their forehand volley.
