The flat smash aims to bring the ball back to the striker's side of the court after it hits the back glass. Success relies on timing and selecting the right ball. Players often fail by attempting the shot while off-balance or leaning back, which leads to hitting the back glass or the partner. Only execute this shot on easy, high balls that allow for a stable stance.

Technique requires contact slightly in front of the body rather than overhead. Keep the stroke flat without topspin or side spin, aiming straight down the line to minimize the opponent's reaction time. Use the non-dominant arm as a guide to track the ball and improve timing. Holding the racket lower and with a looser grip allows for more wrist snap at impact. Practicing by hitting against one's own back glass helps develop the motion without needing to hit with maximum power. This shot is most effective when used to change the pace during a slow rally or against a weak return.
