The ideal moment to play the shot is when the opponent is positioned deep in their court, especially if their balance is leaning backwards after a deep volley or bandeja.

Technique centers on creating backspin by coming underneath the ball. This spin ensures the ball travels backward after the bounce, increasing the distance the opponent must cover. A helpful drill involves bouncing the ball and slicing underneath it to observe the backward rotation before moving to net practice. To maintain disguise, the motion should mirror a normal volley rather than a distinct, obvious swing. Excessive height on the ball often results from swinging too far upward, so keeping the trajectory low is necessary. Success relies on proper footwork and turning side-on, treating the dropshot like a controlled volley rather than forcing a perfect winner.
