Defensive tactics: low returns and lob selection

Defending starts by returning the first serve low to the server. This forces the server to handle a difficult ball while moving forward, keeping the net player out of the play. If the opponent's volley is heavy or deep, continue playing low shots to the feet to maintain neutrality. Avoid attempting a lob until receiving a ball that is not deep, allowing enough time to move back and get under the ball with an open racket face.

After hitting a lob, do not automatically rush to the net. Observe the opponent's reaction. If the lob passes the opponents, move forward to the net position. If they prepare for an overhead, stay back near the baseline to defend. When facing overheads, use the side glass or back glass to set up your next move, or play an inside-out forehand if the ball is away from your body. If the opponent stays in the transition area after an overhead, use a chiquita to exploit the gap at their feet rather than repeating another lob. This approach suits recreational players who need a reliable system to transition from defense to offense.
