Defensive strategy: prioritizing the lob
Key takeaway from our Guru
How should I approach my defense in padel?
Prioritize hitting a high-quality lob whenever you have time to force your opponents to play from the back. Instead of rushing to the net, stay near the baseline after your lob to defend against fast overheads.
What this lesson covers
Defensive play centers on the objective of reaching the net. Against a strong serve, the return should be simple and low to force the opponents to play the ball. When a volley from the opponent provides enough time, the priority is to hit a high-quality lob to attempt a transition to the net. After hitting the lob, the player should observe the opponent's reaction while staying near the baseline rather than rushing forward immediately. This positioning allows for a better reaction to fast overheads.
Constant repetition of defensive mechanics is necessary to master the game. Players must distinguish between balls that require a turn and those that need to be played off the back glass. If the ball hits the first glass, it requires a direct shot. If it hits the second glass, the player must account for the double bounce. When the ball is far from the leg, the player should open up to hit it. If the ball is close to the leg, the player should prepare a backhand and then turn. Focusing on these technical details is more effective than constantly seeking new, advanced tactics.
