Defensive footwork and volley preparation
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I improve my defensive movement and volley control?
Stay low with your center of gravity and keep your support leg behind you when moving back to defend. For volleys, keep your preparation short and in front of your body to maintain tension and stay ready for the next shot.
What this lesson covers
Defensive play relies on maintaining a low center of gravity and using a support leg positioned behind the body to generate power. Players often make the mistake of crossing their legs or standing up during the shot, which ruins balance and timing. Keeping the chest low and the preparation compact allows for better control when moving backward to reach the ball. If there is no time to set up, prioritize a simple block rather than forcing an aggressive swing.
Volley technique requires a short preparation in front of the body to maintain wrist tension and control. A long backswing causes the ball to fly and leaves the player vulnerable to the next shot. For crosscourt volleys, the contact point is further in front, while long-line volleys require the preparation to be slightly behind the body. Keeping the swing short ensures the player remains ready for the following ball. Aiming for the area just before the side fence creates confusion for opponents, as they must decide whether to let the ball bounce or play it off the glass.
