Defensive ball classification: red, yellow, and green
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I choose the right shot when defending in padel?
Classify every ball as red, yellow, or green based on the pressure you feel. Only attempt a lob when you receive a green ball, which is an easy, slow shot that gives you enough time to set up properly.
What this lesson covers
Defensive play relies on categorizing incoming shots to make better tactical decisions. Red balls occur under high pressure with little time to react, such as serves, aggressive viboras, or volleys played to the feet. The only objective for red balls is to keep the ball in play without attempting a lob or a winner, as these actions often lead to unforced errors or short lobs that allow the opponents to smash.
Yellow balls represent the majority of defensive situations where the player has more control and time. This category allows for building the point through chiquitas, bajadas, or shots directed at the opponent's feet to change the pace and direction. Green balls are easy, soft shots or balls coming off the glass with ample time to prepare. These are the only moments to execute a lob to transition from defense to the net position. Attempting to smash or win the point on a green ball is a common mistake that forfeits the opportunity to switch to the attack.
