Corner defense: positioning and glass rebounds

Defending the corner requires standing closer to the side glass than many players assume. Staying near the corner allows the player to guard the space and maintain the ability to choose how to play the ball. Leaving the middle of the court open is acceptable because the distance to the center is short and manageable. When the ball hits the side glass, the objective is to create space and buy time by moving backward rather than rushing to meet the ball. Rushing towards the ball negates the advantage of using the glass for a better lob or setup.

Proper technique involves a clear pivot of the body. For a forehand, the right leg initiates the turn, and for a backhand, the left leg. The upper body must rotate so that the shoulder stays near the chin, allowing the player to look at the ball over the shoulder. Maintaining this sideways orientation throughout the movement is vital. Players should avoid simply following the ball with their eyes and instead focus on holding the pivot position while moving to the ball. This approach ensures the player remains balanced and ready to execute a controlled shot.
