Communication in defense: calling middle balls

When defending at the back, the middle area requires specific coordination to prevent both players from chasing the same ball and leaving the court open. If a cross-court ball travels toward the partner, the player who is not taking the shot must call out clearly to define responsibilities.

Commands must be loud and decisive. Using short words like me or you helps eliminate hesitation. When a ball lacks a sharp angle, players must proactively claim the shot or direct the partner to take it. This prevents the common mistake of both players moving toward the center, which leaves both corners vulnerable. Consistent calling allows for better court coverage and smoother transitions, ensuring that neither player assumes the other knows their intention.
